A Biomedical Scientist is a scientist, trained in biology with a particular focus on its medical application. You will gain knowledge on how the human body functions and aim on finding new ways to cure or treat diseases. You learn to develop advanced diagnostic tools or new therapeutic strategies.
Biomedical Sciences are a broad field of study containing biochemistry, zoology, anatomy, genetics, physiology, pathology, botany, chemistry and biology. Within the Masters programme it is common to concentrate on one specific area, like basic research, pre-clinical developments or translational research (i. e. the transfer of results of research into clinical applications).
To get accepted as a Masters student in Biomedical Sciences, it is necessary to have a university degree in biology or in any related scientific area. The standard study time takes one to two years.
Career opportunities include all areas where medicine, biology and health interact. Among those is the development of medical analytic systems, that solve biological and medical problems. Biomedical scientists commonly conduct laboratory tests in order to contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Thus, the career path to a laboratorian opens up for you. Furthermore, the academic career ladder in research and teaching is set out for you, too.
