The Master of Conflict Studies covers theoretical and methodological approaches to conflict analysis, resolution and peace studies. You analyse a particular conflict, position it in a context of human rights and public international law, if applicable, and detect its source. Usually, you also regard the international community’s interaction towards the conflict. What institutions are involved? How do they intervene? Are there institutions, NGOs or states that deliberately intervene or neglect to do so? Has the conflict emerged over resources, culture or geostrategies? The Master of Conflict Studies teaches you all these different elements in conflict resolution in a one- to two-year study duration.
To be eligible for the course in Conflict Studies, you usually need to carry a Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in political science. However, as admission criteria and procedures vary across the many universities specialising in conflict analysis, we advise you to gather information from the universities that appeal you directly. Admission criteria may also alternate from year to year depending on the application rates, for instance.
The Master of Conflict Studies carries an interdisciplinary character, but is a political science degree course. Hence, your career prospects are similar to those of a political science major. Work in research and development, (I)NGOs, journalism and public relations, government organizations, think tanks or political institutions.
