Read on to learn why going south to earn your master’s is an option well worth considering.

Italian universities and fields of study

Italy’s universities are among the oldest and most prestigious in Europe. Currently there are about 89 universities, including six postgraduate institutions specifically for students who already have an undergraduate degree. Many institutions have a focus on business and engineering, but there are just as many that offer master’s courses in the arts, culture, communications or political science. Most programmes, especially at the postgraduate level, emphasize real-world learning and practical training to help their students identify suitable careers.

Degrees, applications and academics at Italian universities

Despite the Bologna Process, many Italian universities have not yet changed the names of their degrees to ‘bachelor’s’ and ‘master’s’. The master’s equivalent in Italy is the ‘Laura Specialista’ or ‘Laura magistrale’ degree, which graduates usually have no problems getting recognized in other countries as well. Prospective master’s students can choose between one- and two-year master’s programmes and usually apply directly at their university of choice. Aside from your bachelor’s diploma, you only need to submit proof of your Italian language skills in most cases. The classroom experience in Italy is rather traditional: Professors generally prefer a lecture-style format, and most examinations are administered orally.

The cost of a master’s degree in Italy

Here’s another benefit of getting your master’s in Italy: Compared to other European countries, the costs are relatively low. For one academic year, you can expect to pay an average of about 750 euros. Additional funding is available at home and abroad to help you cover your daily expenses and the cost of accommodation, for instance through scholarships from local institutions or educational loans. After submitting your application and getting accepted, you are as good as ‘benvenuti in Italia’, where you will benefit from flexible curricula and countless opportunities to enjoy fascinating cities and Italy’s unique flair.
