Portugal is more than just a sunny tourist destination. In recent years, the country has made a name for itself as a popular destination for study abroad as well. Some 35 public universities and more than 94 private institutions offer a diverse range of master’s courses. The most popular areas of study currently include finance and information technology, followed by European studies, international management and tourism. Since Portugal is part of the Bologna system, credits (créditos) are awarded according to the European Credit Point System (ECTS). The names of academic degrees, however, were not changed to the Bologna format, meaning that prospective postgraduate students may earn a mestrado (master’s) after completing their licenciatura (bachelor’s equivalent). Mestrado courses usually take one or two years to complete.
The requirements for admission to a master’s programme vary widely by university and field of study. To be admitted to a master’s degree in Portugal, you usually have to submit your bachelor’s diploma and transcript of records for an equivalency review. Depending on the language of instruction, non-native speakers of Portuguese should be able to demonstrate their proficiency in Portuguese or English. Passing the Provas de Aferição or the TOEFL exam is a convenient way to do so. Moreover, many Portuguese universities offer preparatory and concurrent language courses. Submit all the required documents (certified copies and translations) to the Ministério da Educação. You may also have to pass an admissions test (Provas específicas). Start gathering information about the admissions requirements and deadlines at your chosen university as early as possible.
The costs of living in Portugal are generally lower than in some other European countries, which is partly because average wages and salaries are lower as well. Both public and private universities in Portugal charge tuition fees. At public and polytechnic higher education institutions, you may expect tuition fees of about 500 euros per year, whereas private universities charge up to 1,800 euros per year. Suitable student accommodation is available for 100-350 euros per month. Numerous funding opportunities exist to help you finance your master’s studies in Portugal, including educational loans and scholarships from cultural, political and business organizations. Once you have secured the necessary funds, you are all set to pursue your postgraduate education in Portugal—and enjoy many hours of sunshine along the way.
